Meet beloved children's author and illustrator, Lois Lenski and read her book, Strawberry Girl, the story of a strawberry farming family struggling to make a life for themselves in the backwoods of Florida • Cross the dry, harsh Florida scrublands and marshy swamplands, and journey from the narrow panhandle to the exotic Keys of the Sunshine State (with a study of its geography, culture, history, government, and economy) • Make smooth and tangy Florida Orange Butter • Use objects to tell stories in a mini-storytelling unit • Language and Grammar Skills (subject-verb agreement, verbs, verb phrases and tenses, nouns, adjectives, articles, subjects, predicates, prepositions, prepositional phrases, objects of prepositions) • Splish and splash through a study of water (its importance to life, properties, states, benefits, water conservation, experiments with water in fruits and vegetables, water filtering, solvency of water and dispersion, saltwater and freshwater, buoyancy, displacement, Water World project, water facts and vocabulary, water cycle model, condensation, forms of water, boiling and freezing points, chemical makeup and reactions, cohesion and adhesion, surface tension, gravity, absorption, water pressure, weight, volume, density, and refraction) • Have fun with Bubble Art! • Appreciate American folk songs of Stephen Foster and other folk music and music of the South; Country and Sacred Harp Music • Spelling (Florida words, water words, Southeast words, Spelling bee) • Read about the Seminole Indians and Chief Osceola • Examine George Catlin's paintings of Osceola, and write a summary report about Osceola's life • Experience life in the South (plantation and slave lifestyles) and make Southern Cracklin' Bread • Learn from Jesus, our Rock and Foundation, His words, parables, and His model for prayer as you memorize The Lord's Prayer • Write original tall tales and continued episodes of existing tall tales • Extend the literature and experience culture with a sticky taffy pull • Watch the United States as Sectionalism leads to division between the North and the South, and Congressional Compromises promise to keep the nation united • Follow Noah Webster's life and work with dictionary and encyclopedia skills • Indulge in a treat of rich, chocolaty Mississippi Mud in a study of Mississippi, the Magnolia State - its history, geography, government, economy, and culture • Write narratives of water stories from the Bible • Get a glimpse of Alabama, "The Heart of Dixie," its geography, history, government, economy, and culture – from the beaches, bayous, and swamps to the Appalachian Highlands and caverns. Enjoy Alabama creamy grits with garlic and cheese and Chicken Pilau • Play chess with John Quincy Adams as you learn about his life and presidency and campaign in the Election of 1824.
