See the sights and hear the sounds of America in the early 1800's – cultures, inventions, developments, politics, history, immigrants, economics, scientific developments, transportation, social reform, and Christian foundations and developments • Hear the songs of Americans in Walt Whitman's poem, "I Hear America Singing" and participate in a "My Heart Sings . . ." writing project • Explore American literature, the Romantic Era, and the Fireside Poets • Meet President James Monroe in a Presidential Spotlight, and campaign in the Elections of 1816 and 1820 • Learn American Sign Language as part of the study of the ear (parts and functions, communication, sound waves, decibels, Alexander Graham Bell, Helen Keller, and Edward Gallaudet, Ear Project, threshold distance, hearing disorders and impairment) • Conduct a hearing experiment in "Two are Better than One" • Make creamy orecchiette pasta ears and cheese • Meet the brilliant composer and musician, the Father of the Romantic Era in music, Ludwig van Beethoven, and listen to his works • Create a "Pastoral Symphony" illustrated art project • Enjoy American folk songs, country music, and blues • Language and grammar skills (subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, verb tenses, adjectives, modifiers, articles, palindromes) • Listen to the Sermon on the Mount and memorize the Beatitudes of Jesus • Meet the incredible characters of American Tall Tales . . . Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Stormalong, Mike Fink, Davy Crockett, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, and Joe Magarac, learn about hyperbole and the characteristics of folk tales, and write summaries in a Tall Tales Writing Project • Interpret a graph of Pancakes Eaten by Lumberjacks in Paul Bunyan's Camp, and whip up a batch of Paul Bunyan's Gigantic Pancakes • Spelling and vocabulary words from literature and unit topics • Celebrate the history, economy, geography, government, and culture of Michigan, the Cereal Bowl of America, with a Mega-Cereal Bar • Make edible jiggly eyeballs and create an Eye Project as you study the eye (parts and functions, benefits, color, eye diseases, and blindness, correcting vision, Louis Braille and the Braille Method) • Explore the charm of Tennessee from the Appalachians to the Mississippi Lowlands region and learn the history, government, geography, economy, and culture of our 16th state • Make Tennessee Turnovers to celebrate the beef and barbecue industry of the Volunteer State • Celebrate all things "TALL" in a Tall Tales Tournament with Skewered Stacked Sandwiches and Fruit, Stacked Fruit Shortcakes, Stack Snacks, and Sweet Stacks or Tall Tales Snacks. Play Paul's Flapjack Fling, Pecos Bill's Lasso Challenge, Stormalong's Bowling, Mike Fink's Keelboat Race, Davy Crockett's Grinning Contest, Johnny Appleseed's Apple Challenge, Hammerin' John Henry, and Joe's Hungarian Goulash Relay!
