Learning Adventures

HOW A WORLD OF ADVENTURE WAS BORN

Our son, Ryan, was in the fourth grade when we decided we wanted to teach him at home. We immediately began investigating the different methods of home education, as well as the available products and resources. Because we feel strongly that learning should be a wonderful adventure, we quickly realized that the unit study approach was the one for us. So, with the help of some wonderful resources in the homeschool market, I began putting together a year of unit studies that would meet Ryan's spiritual and academic needs. The following August, we began our homeschooling experience with a study of creation, the flood, and Ancient Mesopotamia, using the Holy Bible, as well as many other excellent resources from the Institute for Creation Research. We continued moving through history, using real books and covering the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. When we arrived at our study of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Age of Exploration, other homeschooling parents began to look interestingly and longingly at our method of study. After years of using traditional textbook curricula, they had become convinced that there had to be a better way to learn – a way to generate some excitement and a LOVE of learning. Although they felt fairly confident in teaching with the textbook curricula, they knew their children weren't developing a passion for learning.

Therefore, I began to show them how they could put together a unit study of their own. However, it became increasingly clear to me, that, while I loved the flexibility of making up my own unit studies, others either simply didn't have the time to devote to such an approach or were not confident in their own abilities to do so. Although there are several excellent unit studies in the homeschooling market that cover selected areas of the curriculum, few include all the subjects on a regular basis.  When they do, the information is not presented in a daily lesson plan format. These parents wanted more than good resource lists and ideas. They wanted to feel the confidence that the scope and sequence gave them. They wanted the daily plans and the structure elements of the traditional textbook approach, even though they knew textbooks weren't for them.

What these parents wanted was a unit study that would cover one whole year of complete curriculum, but that wouldn't cost a fortune. They wanted a good unit study that would be simple and easy to follow, with daily lesson plans - one that would use real books that could be checked out of a local library. Others had the confidence to prepare a unit study, but simply didn't have time to gather all the necessary information to put it all together successfully. What ALL of the parents wanted was a Biblically and Academically sound study - one that was EXCITING and appealing to their children. A World of Adventure was created for them - and for you.

I hope that you will enjoy taking a look at a different approach to learning by visiting this web site. While I would encourage you to purchase our materials, my ultimate goal is to encourage you to take a good look at your teaching methods. Evaluate whether or not whatever you are using is teaching your children to love learning. Make sure that your year is FILLED with lots of LEARNING ADVENTURES!
